Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse at Montana State Hospital provides nursing assessment, planning, interventions, and evaluation for adult clients in a therapeutic mental health environment. The role includes directing and training subordinate nursing personnel and ensuring quality patient care. The nurse collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to support patient rights and treatment plans, particularly in psychiatric inpatient settings. Candidates must hold a current Montana RN license and have relevant experience in mental health, geriatric, or emergency care.

Responsibilities:

• Provide nursing assessments, plan and implement nursing care interventions for adult psychiatric patients.
• Perform patient evaluations and document care accurately and thoroughly.
• Assign work, provide direction, and train subordinate nursing personnel.
• Maintain a therapeutic environment for clients in the facility.
• Utilize technology related to patient care information systems proficiently.
• Ensure knowledge and application of patients' rights and current psychopharmacology.
• Communicate effectively with patients, providers, and interdisciplinary teams.
• Participate in shift work and comply with hospital protocols, including shift differentials and meal provisions.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Current Registered Nurse license in the State of Montana.
• Graduate of an accredited college or university with a degree in nursing.
• Minimum of 1-2 years travel experience.
• At least 2 years of direct mental health nursing experience in state hospitals or mental health facilities, or alternatively 5 years in geriatric care (long-term care, hospice) or 4 years in emergency/urgent care.
• Knowledge of nursing, medications, treatment planning, and psychopharmacology.
• Strong patient assessment and documentation skills.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to use patient care information systems proficiently.
• BLS certification.
• Driver's license.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Experience working with psychiatric inpatient treatment programs.
• CPI certification (if already obtained).
• Additional specialty certifications such as Psych Tech, CNA, MHT, BHT.

Special Considerations:

• Shift differential may be available.
• One meal provided per shift.
• Work environment focused on psychiatric inpatient care.
• Must maintain confidentiality and comply with hospital policies and patient rights.

Scheduling:

• Work schedule primarily 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM shifts.
• 36 to 48 hours per week, with shift assignments based on hospital needs and candidate preferences.
• Shift preferences and requested time off considered during scheduling.
